Goi Cuon, Banh Mi Xiu Mai and Durian Smoothie at Mr Sandwich - French and Vietnamese Cafe in Chinatown, Las Vegas!

Delicious!

Mr Sandwich is a great banh mi sandwich shop and it is a very popular with banh mi fans!  Locals and visitors of Chinatown, Las Vegas rave about the food at Mr Sandwich!  Las Vegas food writers have given Mr Sandwich favorable reviews in the past.  Since my destination today was the 99 Ranch Market at the same plaza, I decided to give Mr Sandwich a try!
Mr Sandwich French Vietnamese Cafe is located at 4215 Spring Mountain Road by the intersection of South Valley View.  The plaza is full of great restaurants and shops.  The Chinese theatre and Chinatown mall are both located at this plaza too.  For shoppers, a great banh mi sandwich is hard to resist!
Like many banh mi shops, the menu is on a large board and each item has a number and a corresponding picture.  The menu item names are printed in both Vietnamese and English language.  There are no stumbling blocks as far as the menu item descriptions are concerned, but the most difficult thing for a customer to do is to decide which items to order!  Everything on the menu board looks great!
A few Vietnamese appetizers and specialty items are offered.  I decided to have Goi Cuon as an accompaniment for my banh mi sandwich.  Goi Cuon is shrimp and ground pork wrapped in rice paper.  Crispy lettuce fills out the rice paper roll.  The accompanying sauce was a satay style sauce of soy and peanut sauce.  The sauce was perfect for the Goi Cuon!  The Goi Cuon was very nicely crafted and the ingredients were very fresh.  The Goi Cuon at Mr Sandwich was a very nice appetizer and the price was very cheap at about $2.00!
Banh Mi Xiu Mai is a Chinese meatloaf banh mi sandwich!  Of all the banh mi sandwich offerings on the menu, the Chinese meatloaf was my choice for this chilly day in Las Vegas.  There is something about meatloaf, when the weather is cold, that is quite appealing!  Chinese meatloaf is made with ground pork and is has a five spice kind of flavor.  The Chinese meatloaf on my banh mi sandwich was juicy and not dried out at all.  This was some good Chinese meatloaf!
The French baguette style banh mi roll was very well made.  Rice flour mixed with wheat flour gave the baguette a very pleasant soft crusty texture.  The banh mi bread was definately the best banh mi bread that I have ever had!
Cucumber, daikon radish, carrot and cilantro fill out the sandwich.  Like all banh mi sandwiches, the portion of meat is appropriately small.  A 3 to 5 ounce portion of meat is all that is needed for banh mi.  Banh mi are meant to be light and refreshing snack sandwiches.  A true fan of banh mi will usually order several different flavors of banh mi sandwiches for one meal.  The price of the banh mi sandwiches at Mr Sandwich are very reasonable.  My Chinese meatloaf banh mi cost less than $3.50!  So, the price does not prohibit a customer from ordering several banh mi at one sitting!
I had a durian fruit smoothie with the Goi Cuon and Xiu Mai Banh Mi.  Smoothies and banh mi seem to go hand in hand!  Durian is known as the king of fruits in asia.  Durian is very large and the husk is thorn covered.  Durian fruit has a strong almond and musty old onion aroma, but the flavor tastes like rich custard with almonds!  A durian smoothie has a very rich almond custard kind of flavor that is very satisfying!
The sign on the front of the restaurant says it all.  Buy Five and Get One Free!  That special is one of the best deals in Las Vegas!  Six banh mi sandwiches are a very filling meal for one person, but there are people that like banh mi sandwiches that much.  Six banh mi is a nice amount for two or three people to share at a table.  Shoppers in Chinatown know how good of a bargain that the banh mi sandwiches are at Mr Sandwich.  Even at 2:00PM in the afternoon, Mr Sandwich was quite busy.  A busy restaurant is always a good sign that the food is great!
Mr Sandwich has a sister restaurant in Chinatown called Pho Hue Thai.  Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Banh Mi are the cuisines of Pho Hue Thai.  I'm sure that I will do a revue of this restaurant in the future.
I heavily recommend Mr Sandwich French Vietnamese Cafe for locals and visitors of Las Vegas!  The banh mi sandwiches are sold at a low enough price, that a customer can afford to eat one after another, till there is no room for more!  Very yummy!  ...  Shawna
